Dan D’Souza

Irish-British baritone Dan D’Souza is developing a versatile career across the opera, oratorio and recital platforms. In 2021 he sang Silvio Pagliacci for Iford Arts Young Artists, recorded Crane Powder Down for Shadwell Opera (world premiere by Rylan Gleave) and covered Boatswain HMS Pinafore for English National Opera. In 2022 he sang Schaunard La bohème for Mid Wales Opera, Beast Beauty and the Seven Beasts for The Opera Story and Sacristan Tosca for Diva Opera. He will sing one of the Flemish Deputies Don Carlo for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden in 2023.

Other opera roles include Papageno Die Zauberflöte, Demetrius A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Royal Academy Opera), Riff West Side Story (Edinburgh International Festival), Conte Perrucchetto La Fedeltà Premiata (The Royal Opera House Mumbai), Escamillo Carmen (King’s Head Theatre), Starveling A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Harašta The Cunning Little Vixen (cover) (Royal College of Music International Opera School). Other performed roles include Sid Albert Herring, Junius Rape of Lucretia, Ferryman Curlew River, and Ben The Telephone. He has created roles in seven new operas for companies such as Tête à Tête, Gestalt Arts, and the King’s Head Theatre.

Frequently in demand on the oratorio platform, he has performed as a soloist in Mendelssohn Elijah, Haydn Creation, Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs, Monteverdi Vespers, Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle, Purcell Dido and Aeneas, Orff Carmina Burana, Bach St John Passion, Bach St Matthew Passion, Purcell Come ye Sons of Art, Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem, and the Requiems of Mozart, Brahms, Duruflé, and Fauré. In 2019 he made his debuts at the Paris Philharmonie and the Sala Santa Cecilia singing High Priest in Handel Semele under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and at Cadogan Hall singing Monteverdi Vespers under Ivor Settlefield. As a recitalist, Dan performs across the UK with varied and creative programmes of lesser known and new songs. He is the 2018 winner of both the Dame Patricia Routledge Nationial English Song Competition and the Royal College of Music Lieder Competition.

Dan was educated at Tiffin Boys School, University of Cambridge, Royal College of Music and Royal Academy Opera. An Associate Artist for Salon Opera, New Generation Artist for Iford Arts and a Southrepps Festival Young Artist, he studies with Raymond Connell and Jonathan Papp and is grateful for the support of the Josephine Baker Trust.
