Dr Trevor Agus
Dr Trevor Agus is a hearing researcher and senior lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast in SARC, a centre for research in sound and music. He sings and plays a menagerie of musical instruments and always wanted to make music using computers. To this end, he completed a maths degree. This didn’t help much at first but has been useful in his career as a hearing researcher, starting as a PhD student at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research in Glasgow and continuing as a post-doc researcher for five years at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, before returning to Northern Ireland in 2013. He manipulates everyday sounds and asks listeners questions about them to understand how we make sense of the complex soundscapes we live in, with or without the hearing losses that will affect most of us eventually.
