Ellen Mawhinney

Originally from Northern Ireland, Ellen Mawhinney is a soprano who has most recently won Northern Ireland Opera’s Young Opera Voice of the Year award after winning the Deborah Voigt Prize at Northern Ireland Opera’s Festival of Voice. She has received the Irish Heritage Bursary Award after winning the competition at the Wigmore Hall, winner of the Inaugural Charles Wood Song Competition and Blackwater Valley Opera Festival’s most recent bursary award winner. Most recently she has been a featured artist live on BBC Radio 3: In Tune and has recorded with BBCNI as their spotlight recitalist for Classical Connections. She is also hoping to move to London this September as she has been awarded a place at the Royal Academy Opera Studio.

Opera performances: Alice in Wonderland – Opera Collective Ireland, Die Fledermaus – NI Opera (Chorus), the roles of Gretel, Konstanze, Zdenka and Marguerite (RCS Scenes), Scottish Opera’s concert production of Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel and Jonathon Dove’s The Day After.
