Petra Wells
Petra Wells is a soprano based in Belfast. She trained under Professor Robert Alderson whilst studying Law at the University of Manchester and continues her training with Valerie Reid and Graeme Danby, London. This is Petra’s fourth year with the Chorus Development Programme. Her roles for Northern Ireland Opera include the role of Daughter in Glass/Moran’s ‘The Juniper Tree’ with chorus roles in ‘Eugene Onegin’, ‘Nobody/Somebody’, ‘Tosca’, ‘La Traviata’ (Study Cover – Annina), ‘La Bohème’ and ‘Die Fledermaus’.
Petra has been a featured soloist across Northern Ireland including Morning Melodies at the Grand Opera House Belfast, Rosemary Street Summer Recital Series, Red Sails Festival Portstewart and Walled City Music Festival Derry. Petra made her Ulster Hall solo debut in the 2024 concert, Croí Na Cathrach, in celebration of the Lord Mayor of Belfast’s tenure as well as performing as part of the Lord Mayor of Belfast’s Musical Finale in 2025 at Belfast City Hall.
Outside of the mainstage productions, Petra has been part of the Northern Ireland Opera Chorus and other choral societies performing regularly in the Ulster Hall. More recently, the Priests Farewell Concert with Capella Caeciliana, Haydn’s ‘The Seven Last Words of Christ’, Sólás Fundraising Concert and Chorus! The NI Opera Chorus in Concert.
Petra was a finalist in the 2023 Glenarm Festival of Voice, receiving training from Dr Ingrid Surgenor, Professor Mark Wildman, Simon Lepper and Ben McAteer. Petra has also received training from Thomas Johnston of Opera Australia in Sydney which was funded by a grant from the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust.
