Director Cameron Menzies talks to The Sondheim Hub about our upcoming production of ‘Follies’ at the Grand Opera House, Belfast.
Northern Ireland Opera’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Cameron Menzies, was recently invited to talk to the Sondheim Hub about his plans for our major new production of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s Follies, which will run at the Grand Opera House from 13 to 20 September 2025.
The Sondheim Hub is a fantastic resource both for aficionados of Stephen Sondheim and for those discovering his work for the first time. Here’s an excerpt from the conversation on the hub with Cameron Menzies:
‘I think right now, there’s something important about remembering the good times. Whether you’re from the theatre or not, everyone understands what it means to revisit a part of your past. It could be your football team, your high school, your church group—it doesn’t matter. That feeling of “Have I aged more than them?” or “Who’s done well, and who hasn’t?”… That’s universal. So yes, the music’s amazing, and the story is powerful, but it’s that human core that makes me want to do Follies. It looks back in order to see where you are now, and that’s a theme everyone can relate to.’
