It's 1971 and the girls of Weismann’s ‘Follies’ are returning with their partners to the decaying theatre on Broadway which holds so many memories for them for one last time before it is demolished. Time may have moved on, but inside the theatre old connections stir, rivalries flare and ghosts of the past are woken. By the time they all leave the theatre for one last time, their world’s will have shifted and nothing will be the same again... 'Follies' is an award-winning musical from a book by James Goldman and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim which we are producing in The Grand Opera House, Belfast this September. This legendary work features unforgettable songs including ‘Broadway Baby’, ‘I’m Still Here’, ‘Could I Leave You’, and ‘Losing My Mind’. ‘Follies’ will be directed by @cameronmenziesdirector, Artistic Director of Northern Ireland Opera. His critically acclaimed production of ‘Into The Woods’ at The Lyric Theatre, also with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, was awarded Best Production at The Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards in 2022. Meet the soloists who will be performing with the NI Opera Chorus in concert with Ulster Orchestra on 18 April - Good Friday - in the Ulster Hall @waterfront_ulster_hall Soprano @marymccabesoprano mezzo @jennybourke_mezzo tenor @euanmcdonaldtenor and baritone @seamus_brady8 will be performing solos for Haydn's 'The Seven Last Words of Christ': a deep, contemplative drama based on the events leading up to the crucifixion and the earthquake that marked the moment of Jesus’s death. Images from a beautiful night on Saturday, performing at a fundraiser in @waterfront_ulster_hall for @solasspecialistservices . Thank you to the NI Opera Chorus for their performances of the Champagne Chorus from Die Fledermaus (soloists @petrawells_soprano @jennybourke_mezzo , baritone @seamus_brady8 ), The Humming Chorus from Madame Butterfly and 'Make Our Garden Grow' from Candide (soloists soprano @susan_shepherd27 and tenor @dessiehavlin ). Thank you to pianist @tristanrusscher and to @paulbasso01. An absolute highlight was performing a beautiful new song composed by @matthewowensuk alongside the children of Sólás and the Ulster Consort Choir @ulsterconsort - absolutely showstopping and a joy to be involved. We loved listening to performances by @hardrainse , M’ANAM @manam_men, The Ulster Consort and The Cross Border Youth Orchestra - what a fantastic event for a great cause. We're looking back today at some of our production images from our award-winning and critically acclaimed production of 'Into The Woods' at Lyric Belfast - from three years ago this week! After the Belfast run, this production travelled to @westaustralianopera in Perth, with the full NI Opera creative team and an Australian cast, reaching a whole new audience and more rave reviews on the other side of the world. We're so excited to be bringing another Stephen Sondheim musical to the stage this September, this time at @gohbelfast 'Follies’, by Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman, won 7 Tony Awards on its debut on Broadway in 1971. Next week, on 21 January, we have two sold-out events at the brilliant annual 'Out To Lunch' festival @cathedralquarterartsfest in @theblackboxbelfast .
